It's OK to Change Your Mind

The moment is seared into my brain. That is, the exact moment I knew I had hit burnout. I was about to get on a prospect call, and I couldn’t find my phone anywhere. I drove home from the office and back before I finally found it. In the office fridge!

At the time, I was juggling so much—too much, I realize now. So, the very next day, I headed off to the lake for the weekend, slept a lot, wallowed a little, and felt better. It didn’t “fix” anything—that took more than a couple of days—but it did help me take a step back and look at things differently.

I was battling two different voices in my head. One was saying, “You set a goal!” and “You’re not a quitter!” and “If you just try a little harder, you can do it!” At the same time, another voice said, “Rest. This is not sustainable.” and “Give yourself a little grace.” And, “You have a lot on your plate. Maybe it’s time to let some of it go!”

Perhaps you’ve been there. Maybe you’re there right now.

If you are, I want to tell you what I needed someone to tell me then.

It’s okay to change your mind.

It’s okay to set a goal of four launches and instead, do two.

It’s okay to pump the brakes on a project because your team changed, your priorities have shifted, or it’s stealing your joy.

It’s okay to say: “You know what, never mind. Maybe later, but for right now, I’m changing my yes to no.”

It’s okay to wave goodbye to a system, process, or product that worked before but doesn’t anymore.

It’s okay to reconsider. Maybe that tool or feature you hated isn’t so bad after all.

Circumstances change and so can your plan. Changing your mind doesn’t make you a bad leader. In fact, it’s a sign of a great one.

As entrepreneurs, we put so much pressure on ourselves to maximize every moment of the day and nail it from the get-go. The reality is, that pressure doesn’t always make us more productive. Sometimes the most constructive thing you can do is press pause, sit still, or even take two steps back in the direction you came from. You’ll get there, friend. I know you will.

Give yourself some grace today. You’re doing great! You don’t have to get it right the first time. What matters is that you keep learning, growing, and reevaluating as you go.

Where do you need to give yourself space to change your mind? Maybe it’s time to let go of something that’s not serving you anymore. Or maybe it’s time to try something new. Is LinkedIn in that category for you? If so, I’d love to help you lean into that. Check out my newest guide: Leveraging AI in LinkedIn: Your Guide to the Features, How to Use Them, & Cautions.
